Hotels & Hospitality

A hotel sells the same room three hundred times a year and almost never twice at the same price. The room is the inventory, the night is the unit, and tonight's unsold room is gone in the morning.

What it covers

The night is the unit of stock

A room unsold tonight cannot be sold tomorrow. Availability is a calendar rather than a quantity, and overbooking is a deliberate commercial decision that the system should let you take with your eyes open.

Rates are a matrix

Season, channel, length of stay, board basis and corporate agreement. The same room on the same night carries a dozen legitimate prices, and the front desk has to be able to justify the one it quoted.

The folio collects the whole stay

Room, restaurant, laundry, minibar and spa, posted from wherever they happened and settled once at departure — then split between a company and a guest at the counter, without re-keying any of it.

Housekeeping is the operation

A room is sold, occupied, dirty, cleaned or out of order. The front desk cannot sell what housekeeping has not released, so the two have to be looking at the same board in real time.

Channels draw on the same rooms

The travel site, the agent and the guest at the door all take from one inventory. A rate change or a stop-sell has to reach every channel at once, because the slow one is where the overbooking comes from.

The night audit closes the day

One process rolls the date, posts the room charges, proves the revenue and leaves a day behind it that cannot be quietly edited. It is the hotel's equivalent of locking the till.
